Meeting Minutes

June 2015 Meeting of the Hudson Valley Modern Quilt Guild
June 28th, 2015
Howland Public Library

Unfortunately, due to poor weather, the pool party at Kristin's house was cancelled and we met at the library instead.

The programs for July (Pat Yamin), August (Jessica Van Denburg), and September (Harper Keehn---scissor sharpening)  are set. October Denise will do “Triangle Frenzy table runner”. November is our retreat. December we’re having a pillow gift/exchange and brunch at Shadows on December 6th. Kristin volunteered to make our reservations. She’s also volunteered to help us find a location for a Log Cabin pot luck for January from 10 to 4 !!

For February she suggested we do a Jelly Roll Race (with a ’Senior’s Division’ for those of us who work more slowly!!)

Susy will check with Garrison’s Desmond-Fish Library and see when they can accommodate us in 2016.

May 2015 Meeting of the Hudson Valley Modern Quilt Guild
May 31, 2015
Desmond Fish Library

We had a great fabric de-stash at the meeting today.  Filling a whole table with items to pick through.  Karen took the remainders to donate to Project Linus.  It was a good chance for everyone to clear the decks and start on something new.
We had sewing for about an hour and then commenced with the business portion of the meeting.  We showed our progress on our Paint Chip Minis.  There were lots of very creative uses of the color choices.  These will be displayed somewhere in the area over the summer/fall.

June meeting is planned for Kristin's house as a brunch/pool party
July meeting will feature Pat Yamin
August meeting will feature Jessica Van Denburgh from Sew Many Creations
September meeting will have scissor sharpening.

April 2015 Meeting of the Hudson Valley Modern Quilt Guild
April 26, 2015
Howland Public Library, Beacon NY

In attendance:

Beth, Michelle, Katy, Julee, Kristen, Jackie, Karen, Peggy

Lots of lovely show and tell (Katy took some pics)

Discussion of the paint chip challenge – we decided that there could be some deviation from the strict rules because some folks had already purchased their fabric/started and there was some inconsistency about what was allowed. Many ppl are going to use the accent colors in the photo on the chips, in addition to the three paint colors.

We made a plea for more admin help, as we are all very busy and don’t have enough time to get everything done that will help the Guild run better. We decided that we will have minimum 4 month terms for volunteer positions, and we hope everyone can help out!

  • Correspondence, emails, membership: Michelle will continue doing this.
  • Social Media, including sending emails for meeting announcements, posting photos, facebook, etc. : Katy Hope stepped up!
  • Special Events (retreat, holiday brunch, exhibits): Kristen will head up.
  • We are still looking for a Programming coordinator. We would like people to step up for 4 month shifts. THIS DOES NOT MEAN YOU PLAN EACH MEETING FOR EACH MONTH FOR FOUR MONTHS, but that you coordinate them. Many people have many ideas, but it is not working to have people take a month at a time. If you volunteer for this position, you will have lots of help with ideas and planning, we just need someone to hold all of the info and make sure it’s handled!

Goals for 2015:
  • Have a small guild show, perhaps with the paint challenge quilts, or another challenge, in a small local venue.
  • Another retreat! Last September’s retreat was fun! Perhaps we need just a little bit bigger space, though.
  • We’d like to do the Holiday party again in December.

Goals for 2016:
  • Small Quilt Show – Peggy’s husband’s senior center may be a good venue. Of course there is a lot of work that goes into a show, but we’d like to try! More discussion to come.
  • A class with a national name. We have talked about Denyse Schmidt, and have many other ideas. We would invite other near by guilds for more interest.
  • Another retreat, perhaps with teachers, more attendees (again, asking near by guilds!).

Next Meeting is May 31st in Garrison.
We will have a destash and trade and present and discuss our minis for the Paint Chip challenge.

The next meeting is June 28th at Kristen’s house. 10 am to 12 pm, potluck brunch and pool party!
Bring four Summer-themed fat quarters to trade!

July meeting will be in Beacon. We are discussing asking Nydia Kehnle or Pat Yamin of Come Quilt with Me to present a trunk show.

Other ideas for future meetings (again – if you want to be the programming coordinator starting in July, there is lots here to work with!!):
Class demos from those who attended quilt con (beth could do Luke Haynes upcycled technique or Shasiko stitching, who else?)

A day of Disappearing Nine Patch or Irish Chain – simple patterns with endless possibilities. We could see how each member interprets them, see the different options, and start a great discussion about what makes these traditional patterns modern!

Machine Maintenence

Sharpening – have someone on site

Show panel – someone who has judged quilt shows to tell us the ins and outs!
